Spoil Island was inspired by a photograph Debbie took herself of one of the small islands in the Indian River Lagoon near her Florida home.
These islands, created from material dredged during the construction and maintenance of the Intracoastal Waterway, became familiar features of the lagoon landscape. Debbie was drawn to the quiet beauty of the island, the surrounding water, and the subtropical vegetation.
Working from her own photograph, she transformed that familiar scene into Spoil Island — a distinctly Florida landscape and a reflection of the places that surrounded and inspired her.
